Pharmacy Profile: Apotheke Zürichberg – Local Provider with Principles dgdfg
It’s just after nine in the morning when Monika Steiner opens her pharmacy in Zurich’s District 7. The first customers are already waiting. An elderly gentleman with a bag full of medication packages, a young mother with a toddler, a student with a prescription. Three different worlds, three different needs – and a pharmacy that has been trying to serve them all for 45 years.
An Institution in the Neighborhood
Apotheke Zürichberg was founded in 1981 by Monika’s father, pharmacist Hans Steiner. She took it over in 2009 after studying at the University of Zurich and working for five years in a hospital pharmacy in Bern.
«I actually wanted to go into industry,» she says today with a smile. «But then I came back here and realized: This is it. The proximity to people, the genuine advice.»
The Team
Seven people work today at Apotheke Zürichberg, including three licensed pharmacists. The team is deliberately kept small.
«I know every customer by name. That’s our biggest advantage over chain pharmacies,» says Steiner. «When Mr. Müller picks up his blood pressure medication, I know he recently changed his family doctor and I pay attention to changes in the prescription.»
Digitalization: Yes, but
Apotheke Zürichberg has been EPD-connected since 2024. The investment has paid off, says Steiner – especially for complex patients with multiple prescribers.
«We make no compromises when it comes to personal consultation. Digitalization is a tool, not an end in itself.»
